Dr. Alfonso Díaz, pediatra y neonatólogo en Mérida

English-speaking pediatrician in Mérida

I’m Dr. Alfonso Díaz Novelo, a pediatrician and neonatologist in Mérida, Yucatán. I see children from birth through adolescence, and your visit can be entirely in English. I trained in pediatrics at Centro Médico Nacional La Raza (IMSS-UNAM) and in neonatology at Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre (ISSSTE-UNAM), and earned my medical degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán. I keep up to date at international meetings such as the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference (2023 and 2025) and the annual meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2024 and 2026).

How I can help

  • Birth and newborn care. I can attend your baby’s birth, vaginal or C-section, with immediate skin-to-skin contact, and see your newborn in the first days for weight, feeding, jaundice, newborn screening and hips. Home visits are available for newborns.
  • Premature babies. Neonatal intensive care and follow-up after the NICU: growth, eyes, hearing and development.
  • Breastfeeding and starting solids. Latch, milk supply, weight gain, and a step-by-step plan for first foods.
  • Reflux, colic and cow’s milk protein allergy. Finding out why your baby cries or spits up, without unnecessary medication.
  • Development. Milestone checks and early stimulation.
  • Autism and neurodivergence. Early screening for autism and ADHD, and everyday pediatric care adapted to neurodivergent children.
  • Well-child visits. Growth, development, vision, hearing and age-appropriate guidance, from newborns to teenagers.
  • Teenagers. Growth, puberty, vaccines (including HPV) and a confidential space to talk.
  • School and sports forms. Medical certificates for school, daycare, sports and summer camps.
  • Vaccines. Following the Mexican national schedule, plus the yearly flu shot for children and adults.
  • Coughs, colds and fever. Bronchiolitis, asthma, pneumonia, sore throats, ear and urinary infections.
  • Tummy troubles. Gastroenteritis and diarrhea, constipation, recurrent tummy aches and parasites.
  • Allergies. Food allergies, hay fever, eczema and hives.

If you are moving from another country, bring your child’s vaccination record: I’ll match it to the Mexican schedule and tell you what, if anything, is missing.

Where I see patients

Hospital Faro del Mayab, Santa Gertrudis Copó

Office 909, 9th floor, inside the hospital. If your child needs lab work, imaging or emergency care, it’s all in the same building. Monday to Friday, 4 to 8 pm; Saturday, 2 to 6 pm.

Plaza Héroes, Los Héroes

Street-level office at Calle 113 #637, between 146 and 148, in Los Héroes. Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm; closed on Wednesdays.

Booking and payment

The easiest way to book is WhatsApp: send us your child’s name and age and the location you prefer, and we’ll offer you the first available time. I accept GNP Seguros according to their fee schedule. You can pay in cash, by debit or credit card, by bank transfer or with PayPal.

When to go to the emergency room

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if your child is struggling to breathe, has blue or gray lips, is very drowsy or hard to wake, has a seizure, or shows signs of dehydration. In a baby under 3 months, a temperature of 38 °C (100.4 °F) or higher is always an emergency.
